Diesel vs regular fuel
Diesel vehicles of the past are thought of as dirty, loud and big, but with today’s advancements in technology, diesel engines more closely mimic a typical gasoline engine, meaning diesel-powered engines could be on the rise.
Not only are today’s diesel engines more eco-friendly than those of yesteryear, but diesel vehicles get incredible fuel economy, sometimes even close to that of a hybrid. And while fuel economy is a great reason (and a very common one) for purchasing one vehicle over another, there are a few more facets to owning a vehicle with a diesel engine that you should consider before springing for the new vehicle.
When considering whether to purchase an engine that uses diesel vs regular fuel, it’s important to note that overall, vehicles with a diesel engine have a higher price tag than a gas-powered vehicle of the same model.
Diesel engines also end up costing a little more to maintain and own in the long run because today’s diesel vehicles have new environmental requirements such as a reservoir of urea that gets inserted into the exhaust to subdue some of the pollutants.
This change, however, means that diesel engines of today tend to leave less of a carbon footprint than typical gasoline vehicles, a change many environmentally-friendly consumers welcome. The diesel engine of today has a little more maintenance involved though because it is more environmentally friendly. For example, diesel vehicles tend to have somewhat higher insurance, repair and maintenance costs.
Vehicles with diesel engines tend to have a lower depreciation rate though, because they are more expensive at the point of consumer purchase.
In the end, it really comes down to consumer preference. Both fuel sources have pros and cons, and are accessible to the masses. It’s important to think about what’s most important to you when purchasing a new vehicle, and to check your bank account too.
