What to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey
It’s always hard to cook for the holidays. We give you all a lot of credit, because by hosting the holidays, not only are you opening up your home to others but you’re opening up one of the most intimate parts of your lifestyle for criticism: your cooking. Whether this is your first time hosting Thanksgiving, or you’re a seasoned pro, it can be a little nerve wracking.
But in our opinion, it’s always to have leftovers than to have not enough food to feed everyone. Trust us.
So you made too much turkey. Who cares! Lucky for you, we came up with a few ideas of what to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey, because we all know it was too delicious to just discard or give to the dogs.
The first idea of what to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey is to do the obvious, make turkey sandwiches. Just place pieces of turkey on bread, add some mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, or whatever strikes your fancy, and chow down. This is one of the easiest ways to use up that leftover Thanksgiving turkey, and probably one of the most versatile and portable.
Another idea of what to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey is to make soup. Add turkey to some pre-made broth, add some cooked rice, veggies and cream soup if you want, and heat to your heart’s desire. This recipe is super easy and also versatile so anyone can make it.
You can also use leftover turkey in the place of chicken in pasta dishes. Turkey primavera is super easy to make and fills you up. That, and it doesn’t taste like Thanksgiving so it doesn’t seem like a repeat meal. All you have to do is cook some pasta, add veggies such as mushrooms, asparagus, carrots, squash, zucchini, or whatever else you want, add the diced turkey, and any type of sauce and you’re good to go! We like to use 1 cup of heavy whipping cream heated with 1 envelope of Italian salad dressing mix for an easy sauce. Just add to skillet with turkey, pasta and veggies. Bring the sauce mix to a boil and stir for 2 minutes.
Our final favorite idea for what to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey is to make shepherd’s pie. This one uses your leftover mashed potatoes, leftover veggies, cheese and that’s it! In a pan layer veggies, leftover turkey in a pan. Add some turkey broth (just enough to coat everything), mix up and cover with mashed potatoes. Heat in oven until all is warm. Top with shredded cheese. Leave in oven long enough for cheese to melt.
