Despite what seems like never-ending snow, barley, and flat land, living in the prairies still has its perks. For one, Alberta’s farming lands are some of the most copious in the country for growing and harvesting fresh produce (no Shirley Jackson-esque “Lottery” required). It’s no wonder thousands of people flock here to enjoy all the U Pick Edmonton sites on offer. Take a look below and see some of Great West Chrysler’s best picks for picking.
Big Rock Berry Farm
Located in Spruce Grove, Big Rock Berry Farm is perfect for those looking to grab some fresh raspberries, cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, and haskaps. Since 2012, this family-owned berry farm has been the destination for Albertans wanting to berry pick in an intimate friends and family environment. The U-Pick farm is by appointment on weekdays and first-come first served on weekends.
Prairie Berry Farm
This mom and pop-owned berry farm prides itself on growing fruits and veggies the old fashioned way. Everything grown on the Prairie Berry Farm is chemical-free using sustainable methods, with over 6,000 trees planted since 2006. They specialize in some of the freshest saskatoons, raspberries, cherries, haskaps and black currants in the province. They pre-pick the berries for you, but you also have the option for U-Pick as well. You can check them out during harvest season from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily on the North side of Highway 14 at Range Road 213.
Sprout Farms has been Edmonton’s go-to 7-acre apple orchards for years. Located just 30 minutes north of Edmonton near Bon Accord, Sprout Farms grows the freshest apples with the most sustainable practices and methods around. They also have on-site grass and weed management, courtesy of some of the orchards’ furry friends, such as Junior the llama, Buddy the donkey, and up to 30 sheep. But don’t sleep on this great apple picking site, because we’re counting on you to check it out for yourself! Even though they don’t offer U-Pick anymore, you can still pick up their fresh apples at their farm gate for you to take home for yourself!
Established in 1991, Stevens Strawberries is known for having some of the sweetest strawberries around! The farmland has been with the family since 1920, and the second generation of Stevens commits to growing pesticide-free strawberries with no insecticides, fungicides, or herbicides. You have two options to pick these berries up; you have on-site U-Pick available at $3.25/lb, or pre-picked berries at $26.00 for a 4-litre, 5 lbs. pail. Stevens Strawberries is located 30 minutes south of Edmonton and 50 minutes north of Red Deer.
These were only a few of the finest fruit picking locations Alberta has to offer. From all of us at Great West Chrysler, enjoy and make sure you get some fresh fruit before the season changes!
