While there are plenty of things to do throughout Edmonton when the weather is ripe, it’s a little more difficult when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Personally, I’m a fan of a nice cruise in my Dodge Challenger, soaking up the sunshine with the perfect soundtrack coming out of the speakers. But sometimes, driving in the rain with great moody playlist is just as satisfying an experience. Much in that same vein, visiting some of Edmonton’s hotspots during the cooler, rainy conditions have perks that you’ll miss in the hot and dry weather. Here’s a list of our favourite things to do on rainy days in Edmonton:
Edmonton’s premier botanical garden is always a great choice for any weather! The pyramid-shaped buildings house over 700 species of plants in 3 climate-regulated biomes. In addition to the available guided tours and school programs, the Muttart hosts plenty of events, including Adults Only nights where you can explore the pyramids with themed tours and dinners (not to mention drinks). But hurry, the Muttart Conservatory will close for renovations starting July 2019 and won’t re-open for another 18 months.
Right in the heart of downtown, near Churchill Square, is the Art Gallery of Alberta—an amazing piece of architecture featuring some of the provinces’ most idiosyncratic art installations. If you’re looking to tend to your cultural side, one of the best things about the Art Gallery is that there are several opportunities to explore the exhibits without even paying admission! If you’re under 17 years of age, attend a post-secondary institution, or are an active AGA member, you get free admission into the Art Gallery any day of the week! For everyone else, the Art Gallery also has an All Access evening every Thursday from 5-8 pm where the general admission is free for everyone who walks into the door. The Art Gallery also contains Zinc, a fantastic fine-dining restaurant serving local ingredients in a relaxed atmosphere.
Family Favourites at Cineplex
If you’re looking for something with a little more quality time attached to it, bring the entire family to a Cineplex near you for Family Favourites. Every Saturday at 11 am, participating Cineplex theatres offer community viewings, featuring recent movies that were released in the past few months. The Family Favourites movie changes every week so you and your family can watch something different with every visit. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of the most recent blockbusters you missed out on from all that adulting you’ve got going on.
Find a Board Game Cafe
There’s nothing like staying indoors to bring people together, to avoid stepping on the wet and mucky sidewalks that prairie cities are so well-known for during rainy days. With that in mind, grab a group of friends and check out some of the city’s neatest board game cafes. A lot of them have a wide selection of games for you and your friends to choose from, including classics like Settlers of Catan, Cards Against Humanity, and should you have the time to destroy said friendship, Monopoly!
