With heavy-duty performance, an abundance of space, along with Dodge’s signature safety and technological innovations, you can’t go wrong with either the 2019 Dodge Durango or Journey—as far as SUVs are concerned. But that doesn’t mean you can just flip a coin and purchase one or the other. That’s why the team at Great West Chrysler have put together this quick comparison between the two, so you can hopefully pick which one is right for you and your lifestyle.
What’s the difference between the two?
Despite being the automotive-equivalent of siblings, the 2019 Dodge Journey and Dodge Durango both offer a different experience, alongside their shared experience of knowing how to handle hard-driving terrain. How each vehicle gets you through said terrain is where the differences between the two sport-ute brutes begins, with the base trim level of the Journey powered by a 2.4L DOHC 16V Dual VVT 4-cylinder engine, offering 173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft of torque, and impressive fuel economy to the tune of 9.2 L/100 km on the highway. The Durango, however, takes the edge when it comes to base trims, with a standard 3.6L Pentastar™ VVT V6 providing 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Combined with Dodge’s cutting-edge electronic TorqueFlite® 8-speed automatic transmission, the Durango also finds a way to keep you on the road between trips to the gas station longer. With an option to upgrade to the same engine in the Journey, this comparison might seem like a wash—that is, until you take into account the Durango SRT, whose 6.4L HEMI® SRT V8 makes it the most powerful 3-row SUV in Canada (probably thanks to its 470 lb-ft of torque, and 475 horsepower). While there are further differences between the two, the engine choices offered by the Durango make it the superior choice for those who like to have a bit more power at their fingertips.
What about the interior?
Both Dodge SUVs offer a great deal of utility, providing smart storage solutions alongside seating for 7. However, both SUVs offer a different approach to get to that point. The 2019 Journey, with 67.6 cubic feet of cargo space, utilizes Dodge’s Tilt ‘n Slide® bench seating system in its child-friendly 2nd-row for ease of access to the 3rd-row seats. The 2019 Durango, with up to 84.5 cubic feet of cargo space, offers the option of 2nd-row captain’s chairs, creating a more comfortable seating arrangement as well as more choice when it comes to mixing and matching your seating and storage options. One thing is certain, with both Dodges offering the award-winning Uconnect infotainment system, you’ll be able to stay connected no matter which SUV you choose.
Which one is better?
Hopefully we’ve been able to provide you with the information needed to make your choice, as to which one of these SUVs is best for you and your family. Although, there’s probably one more important aspect for us to bring up: price. While the Durango does offer a few more amenities to go with the extra power under the hood, it does start at $45,395, quite a bit more than the entry-level Journey with a sticker starting at $24,145. If price is not an issue, then we certainly lean toward the 2019 Durango due to its powerful base engine. However, the 2019 Dodge Journey offers exceptional value, combining tried and tested Dodge performance and design to the table at a price that can’t be beat.
