The First Chrysler Car
Back in 1925, Chrysler was founded from the remains of the Maxwell Motor Company by Walter Chrysler. The first order of the new Chrysler company was manufacturing the Chrysler Six. The Six sported impressive technology for its time, starting with a 6-cylinder engine that was shockingly powerful, a replaceable oil filter, and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Cars in that era were primarily viewed as luxury items for the upper class only, however, the Chrysler Six was priced around $2,000, making it extremely affordable to the public when compared to other vehicles of the same calibre.
The new Chrysler corporation found its way into Canada in 1925, the same year it was founded. However, Canadian Chrysler products were different from their American counterparts for some time. In the 1960s, the slang term “Plodge” was used to describe a vehicle hybrid made up of parts of a Plymouth and Dodge; both brand names, of course, belonging to Chrysler. Tariffs on American vehicles and automotive parts were huge at the time, so many Chrysler company models were too expensive for Canadians. Due to their low development cost (thanks to the utilization of parts from multiple vehicle platforms), Plodges gave the small Canadian market access to a plethora of quality vehicles for affordable prices. Today, both Canadian and American markets alike have equal access to Chrysler’s model lineup.
