Used Car buying Guide
Step One: Set a Budget
A good rule of thumb to consider when purchasing a vehicle is to stay within 20% of the amount of your take home pay for your monthly payment. What this means is that instead of pushing for that fully loaded preowned 2013 RAM 1500 you may have to settle for a fully loaded used 2012 RAM 1500 with a few more kilometers on it. Regardless of your budget we are confident that we have a used RAM, or any used Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge vehicle for sale in Edmonton that will meet your needs and budget. Our sales staff will prevent you from getting in over your head and make sure you find the perfect used vehicle to drive in Edmonton today.
Step Two: Build a list…. Or two…
Build out a list of your favorite manufacturers. Whether it’s Used Mitsubishi in Edmonton, Used Honda in Edmonton, Used Acura in Edmonton, Used MINI in Edmonton, Used Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Jeep in Edmonton, Used BMW in Edmonton, or Used Nissan in Edmonton each manufacturer offers a distinct line and set of advantages. Buying a used Nissan means you may be paying more due to their higher resale value, but comes with a reliable name and product. Bargains are always available for those looking for a durable and powerful used RAM especially in Alberta where truck sales are through the roof.
In addition build a list of exactly what you need in your vehicle, whether its child tethers, towing capacity, extra cab space, additional seating, leather seating etc. This will help narrow down to specific models. Finally build a list of extras you would love to have, these are bonuses that your sales representative will try to include in the vehicle if it is reasonable within your budget.
Step Three: Check Reviews (And Prices)
After narrowing down your list to a few different vehicles do a little more research and see what current or previous owners have to say about them. Maybe you love the look of the used Dodge Charger you saw at the corner lot but the fuel economy is not practical for your 150 KM daily commute. Maybe the Jeep Wrangler is the perfect fit for your sporty lifestyle but you want to see if they really are as good as they sound. Whatever selection you have made it’s important to know a little more before finalizing your choices and taking one for a drive. Keep an eye out for pricing while on your search and remember that price reflects the vehicle, a $20,000.00 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo may sound too good to be true because it is. Important things to consider are used vehicle history (which we will discuss further), kilometers, maintenance history, etc.
Step Four: Search for Preowned Cars, Trucks, and SUVS for Sale in Edmonton
There are a number of ways to begin your search, the easiest being the internet. Websites such as Kijiji, Autotrader.ca, Auto123.com, etc operate as excellent resources when trying to locate and narrow down your search. If you are searching for a dealership close to home such as Great West Chrysler then good news, using the Used Cars tab at the top of the page you can browse all inventory available on our lot today; just remember that we are a high volume dealership and are associated with a larger dealer group so even if we do not have the used Dodge Dart for sale in Edmonton today then we may be able to track one down for you. Though the internet is a convenient way you may find yourself sifting through a lot of pages with little results. A preferred method may be to contact a sales representative directly over the phone or by walking in and having a conversation regarding the lists you made to receive a professional opinion and see what options are available for you to consider. Saving time by having someone do the leg work for you is a very appealing option in our hectic lifestyles today.
Step Five: Learn a Little About the Vehicle
If you are doing your entire search online or buying privately instead of with a dealership ask for the VIN number to order a CarProof report and see if the vehicle has had any accidents, been rebuilt, registered out of province, etc. The CarProof report discloses important information that a dishonest seller may prefer to keep concealed to get more money for the vehicle.
As a general rule of thumb avoid any vehicles with a negative history or any seller unwilling to disclose the VIN number or CarProof report.
Avoid the used vehicle headaches altogether by purchasing with a dealership such as Great West Chrysler who is entitled to disclose all used vehicle history prior to finalization of the sale, and also mechanically inspects and certifies every vehicle with the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry council (AMVIC) standard prior to resale. This means you will not only receive a vehicle that will likely last you longer, but avoid expensive unforeseen service costs as well.
Step Six: Speak With the Owner
After narrowing down to an option with a trusted history that meets your needs, it’s time to talk to whoever is selling the vehicle. If you are buying your used RAM 1500 privately in Edmonton then this step is especially important as you will have to build a relationship with a source that is not as reputable as a dealership may be. Ask questions to verify the information you already know from the ad, include other key questions about maintenance and driving history. When speaking with the seller avoid beginning negotiations on the phone as it is often better to wait until you see the vehicle in person in order to confirm the quality and overall condition level.
If everything goes well and the vehicle sounds like something you would be interested in purchasing it’s time for you to take a test drive! This is made infinitely easier when purchasing from a dealership as they are able to work around your schedule and tailor an experience directly for you.
Step Seven: The Test Drive
The entire process of buying a used car in Edmonton has been easy so far, with no direct contact and only a phone conversation or two with the dreaded used car salesman you’ve been fortunate so far. Now its time for the part most people dread when searching for a used car, the test drive. The important thing to remember at this point is that it is no longer the old days, salesmen have had to adapt to the times of the internet and they are under a great amount of pressure to remain respectful and courteous when helping with your purchase of a vehicle. At Great West Chrysler all of our staff is taught to deliver this guarantee to every customer so that you no longer have to be afraid of visiting our store and taking a test drive.
When you do come to test drive your vehicle it is vital that you simulate your daily driving routine as much as possible. If you have a long highway commute and want to test the AWD capabilities of the Grand Cherokee then make sure you go on Calgary Trail or the Yellowhead and look for road noise at highway speeds, or if you are simply looking for a used Dodge Dart to commute around the city then take it downtown and check for visibility range and fuel economy.
Step Eight: Have a Third Party Inspection Completed
If the vehicle checks out okay and drives well then congratulations! You’re almost there. If you are not a mechanic then now is often a good time to take the vehicle for a more thorough inspection. This can save you thousands of dollars if they find anything which the seller has not disclosed that may prevent you from going ahead with the purchase. If you are buying from a dealership then confirm that the vehicle has been inspected prior to resale and then you know you can avoid this step entirely.
Step Nine: Negotiate!
For many people negotiation can be the most stressful and daunting part of buying a used vehicle. Often when purchasing privately it’s a quick and easy process where you find a middle ground where you both leave happy, no doubts or second guessing or feelings of getting screwed over. It does not have to be any different when visiting Great West Chrysler to purchase a preowned Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or RAM model as well as any other model for sale on our lot.
With the current high amount of competition for used cars for sales in Edmonton it is no wonder that dealers want to go further to guarantee every sale which can create a feeling of pressure. It’s important to remember that this can be avoided altogether through communication from both parties. Come prepared and know what your maximum is, you should have a basic idea from your earlier research. Make sure you are comfortable speaking with the other party and don’t throw an insane low ball that you know will just waste the time of everyone involved. All this serves to do is create frustration between both parties and often leads to a failed negotiation.
If you are reasonable and patient then the dealership will treat you the same way, as mentioned with the high level of competition dealers are willing to throw in extras such as warranties or remote car starters if it will make a deal happen. Once you have hit the number in your head and packaged in a remote starter for your RAM 1500 for the winter time it’s time to say yes!
Step Ten: Sign the Papers
If you are purchasing from a private seller then make sure all necessary paperwork is present when you provide the final payment. Once this is done congratulations! You just sealed the deal and get to enjoy driving your vehicle.
Those who have went through the dealership route will be introduced to the dealerships Finance department where they will negotiate on your behalf to secure a low interest rate for your vehicle. Don’t be afraid of additional warranties, protection packages, or plans brought up during this time by the finance managers, many happy customers have left with the knowledge that the used vehicle they just purchased now has an additional warranty if anything does happen. Consider the options and remember it is perfectly okay to say no.
Once the contracts are prepared review them and confirm all fees, taxes, and prices, prior to signing. After you sign you just need insurance and registration for the vehicle and you’re ready to go!
Once again after the paperwork and money has switched hands its time to enjoy the used vehicle you just bought in Edmonton!
